According to most of the historians and researchers, The National Library of Romania finds its origins, back in one of the oldest libraries from Romania- Saint Sava National College Library. The Saint Sava National College Library opened its doors to the public in 1838, when approximately 1000 volumes of French books were catalogued.

After the 1959 Union, The Saint Sava National College Library obtained the status of national library, achieving alternatively the name of National Library and Central Library.
